IWD: SEREC recognises vital roles of women in maritime sector
The Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) has recognized the vital roles women play in advancing the maritime sector while acknowledging the challenges they have overcome in a traditionally male-dominated field.
The Head of Research, SEREC, Fwdr Eugene Nweke, recognised the vital roles of women as the world celebrate the International Women’s Day (IWD) today, Saturday, March 8, 2025.
Eugene Nweke reaffirmed the commitment of the SEREC in empowering the next generation of women in maritime, while promising to work actively to break down barriers, challenge biases, and create opportunities for women to succeed.
According to him, “As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, I am reminded of the remarkable women I have had the privilege to work with in the maritime industry. Their dedication, expertise, and perseverance inspire me, and I am honored to join the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) in celebrating their achievements.
“We recognize the vital roles women play in advancing the maritime sector and acknowledge the challenges they hve overcome in a traditionally male-dominated field. By actively supporting and mentoring one another, women in maritime have created a ripple effect of positive change, driving innovation, progress, and inclusivity.

He urged women in maritime to develop a robust mentorship succession program to address the impending age gap in the next decade.
