Nigeria to align maritime agenda with international seabed practices

Nigeria’s participation at the 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica, has underscored the commitment of the Federal Government aligning the nation’s maritime development agenda with international best practices and environmental sustainability.

On the sidelines of the event, Nigerian delegation, led by Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola, engaged in high-level discussions that centred on deep-sea mining regulations, environmental protection and sustainable exploitation of marine resources, capacity building and knowledge transfer and trategic economic planning for the Blue Economy sector.

Nigeria’s participation marked a significant step in her campaign for election into the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), leveraging the shared membership of the 167 ISA member states—who are also members of the IMO.

The Nigerian delegation included the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Director of Maritime Safety and Security at the Ministry, Mr. Babatunde Bombata.
