…Customs agents express fears of delays

There is a change in the time of container scanning operations at Apapa Port. All containers are now to be scanned between 2pm and 12 midnight.

The change by the Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service is to enable CCEECC company to work on the railway in the scanning area.

The change, which had started on December 14, would end in January 5, 2025.

PortNews sighted this development in a notice sent by APM Terminals Apapa to all its customers.

According to the notice, “Nigerian Custom service has informed us that there will be a change in the scanning operation time to enable CCEECC company to work on the railway in the scanning area.

“This time change is between December 14, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

“During these periods scanning operations will begin by 2pm to 12 midnight nonstop.”

Some customs agents who spoke to PortNews on the development expressed disappointments and said the numbers of containers that would be listed for scanning per day during this period would be drastically reduced because “Service does not have the capacity to work till late hours of the day.”

They averred that this development might lead to delays, resulting into huge demurrage. They implored the Customs Service and APM Terminals to deploy more workforce to the scanning site to avoid delays.
