NAMA conducts equipment test in Germany to enhance airspace communication

The Managing Director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engineer Farouk Ahmed Umar, has conducted an assessment test of some cutting-edge communication equipment including High-Frequency (HF) transceivers at Rohde & Schwarz in Germany.

The assessment, according to Abdullahi Musa, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NAMA, was decisive a move towards modernising Nigeria’s airspace infrastructure.

During the visit to the German company, Engr Farouk Ahmed Umar expressed confidence in the transformative impact of the equipment. “This move aligns with the commitment of the President towards enhancing the safety of the sector through upgrading and modernising airspace infrastructure,” he stated.

Abdullahi Musa, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, pointed out that the factory assessment was facilitated by Deo Makro Ltd, a Nigerian indigenous contractor partnering with the agency on the project.

The state-of-the-art HF transceivers from Rohde & Schwarz are embedded with sophisticated signal processing algorithms designed to eliminate the high noise levels commonly associated with traditional HF systems.

The adoption of this advanced technology is expected to significantly enhance long-range air-to-ground communication, particularly in areas where conventional Very High Frequency (VHF) systems face limitations.

According to Musa, the new HF solution will ensure seamless and robust communication coverage over critical zones, including the Gulf of Guinea and the expansive Atlantic Ocean.

It will also address communication challenges in the arid northern regions that stretch beyond the Kano Flight Information Region (FIR), where upper airspace coverage has been a persistent challenge.

The project marks a significant step in NAMA’s continuous efforts to fortify Nigeria’s aviation communication systems and elevate the nation’s compliance with global air navigation standards.
