Maritime Police Command assures port stakeholders adequate security following protest by dockworkers

The Marine Police Command has had assured port stakeholders adequate security and safety of all critical port infrastructure following the protest by members of Dockworkers Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) that took place at Apapa Port and Tin Can Island Port, Lagos on Monday, April 28, 2025.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Maritime Police Command, FHQ Annex, Lagos, AIG Musa Yusuf Garba, gave the assurance in a statement issued by the Command’s PRO, ASP Adebayo Rasheed.

The AIG noted that upon receiving information about the protest, the Maritime Police Command promptly deployed personnel to the scene to ensure the safety of lives and property, as well as to maintain law and order within the port premises.

The statement reads thus: The Maritime Police Command wishes to inform the general public and stakeholders in the maritime sector about the protest by dockworkers under the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos, on Monday, April 28, 2025. The protest, organized by aggrieved members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at the conclusion of its election.

Upon receiving information about the protest, the Maritime Police Command promptly deployed personnel to the scene to ensure the safety of lives and property, as well as to maintain law and order within the port premises. Our officers are working diligently to prevent any disruption to port operations and to safeguard critical infrastructure.

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Maritime Police Command, FHQ Annex, Lagos, AIG Musa Yusuf Garba psc(+),IIPS,PSPS, appeals to all parties involved to exercise restraint and to seek amicable resolutions through dialogue and other peaceful means. The AIG has also assured stakeholders and other port users to go about their daily activities while the command will continue to monitor the situation closely and prevent any mayhem.

The Command charged all port stakeholders to report any incidents to the Maritime Police Command through its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Adebayo Rasheed (07045004639)
