Customs seizes 16 containers of contraband worth ₦10 billion

The Nigeria Customs Service says it seized 16 containers of contraband goods valued at ₦10 billion in the seaports in Lagos.

The seizures were as the result of intelligence-led and risk-based operations within Nigerian ports, with a renewed emphasis on deploying non-intrusive technology such as scanners.

The Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi disclosed this development in Apapa, Lagos, on Monday, August 11, 2025.

“Among the most significant interceptions was a 40-foot container (MRSU6407089) jointly examined by Customs and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Initially cleared, a second examination uncovered 202 cans of “Colorado Loud,” a potent Canadian strain of cannabis, weighing 101kg. Further scanning revealed two fully operational rifles, 25 cartridges, a Smith & Wesson pistol with 55 rounds of ammunition, and other accessories” Adeniyi said.

The consignee, identified as a Lagos-based individual, is under investigation.

Other seizures include : Seven containers of expired drugs and prohibited medicaments :Three containers of expired food items, notably margarine, three containers of banned used clothing,  two containers of expired tablets lacking NAFDAC registration.

Others were multiple containers of frozen poultry products  1,290 sacks in one and 1,296 sacks in another, a container with 305 cartons of counterfeit toothpaste infringing on a Nigerian company’s brand and unregistered with NAFDAC

According to the CGC, two additional 40-foot containers, linked to earlier seizures and tracked over time were intercepted upon arrival at the port. Authorities believe they are tied to a broader smuggling network.

He said five suspects were arrested; three had been charged and remanded in prison pending trial, while two were  on administrative bail awaiting court dates.

The customs CG disclosed that credible intelligence had revealed that the suspects operated as part of a coordinated criminal network. The agency has vowed to collaborate with NAFDAC, NDLEA, and international customs bodies to dismantle the syndicates behind the illicit trade.

The Customs boss  declared “We will not allow Nigeria to become a dumping ground for criminals who threaten our collective peace and security.”
