constructsteel has marked the inauguration of a new steel-based Zero Energy Building (ZEB) in Bhubaneswar, developed in partnership with Tata Steel.
The project demonstrates how advanced steel construction technologies can accelerate the development of efficient, climate-resilient buildings in India.
This initiative is the outcome of a constructsteel working group project, developed through the joint expertise and active participation of member companies committed to advancing sustainable steel-based construction.
The 1,836 sq. ft. (170 sq. m) facility was completed in 3.5 months using Light-Gauge Steel Frame (LGSF) construction. The approach enables fast, precise, and low-waste building methods, resulting in a lightweight, durable structure with strong thermal performance suited to India’s climate.
Designed to achieve annual net-zero energy use, the ZEB incorporates a tightly sealed and insulated envelope, high-performance glazing, efficient lighting and cooling systems, and natural ventilation where appropriate. Rooftop solar panels and Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) generate the renewable power required to offset consumption.
Additional features include rainwater harvesting, low-flow fixtures, and modular components that support ease of maintenance and future adaptation.
As part of constructsteel’s mission to promote sustainable steel-based construction globally, this project provides a scalable model for low-energy residential buildings and highlights the important role steel can play in meeting India’s long-term sustainability goals.
