MWUN vows to shut Crown Flour Mills over unionisation

Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and Crown Flour Mills Plc maybe heading to a showdown over the refusal of Crown Flour Mills management allowing staff of the company to join the union in the Lagos ports.

The President General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has threatened to shut down Crown Flour Mills Plc factory in Lagos as a result of this development.

Comrade Francis Bunu Abi noted that the Union has cohabitated with the company for the past 22 within the Ports premises and has continually denied access to unionize the workers in its employ, in spite of the fact that the workers fall under the category of Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria.

“The sad situation, which the Crown Flour Mills workers have been subjected to, shows how oppressive and suppressive the workers have been operated under Crown Flour Mills management for the past twenty-two years running,” said the MWUN.

The PG of MWUN, Comrade Bunu, expressed distrust that this oppression and manipulation of workers could still take place in this modern era of workers globalization labour initiative, where Workers’ rights cannot be shortchanged, especially within their territory of operations.

The union leader however vowed to unionize the workers, and if resisted by the management of Crown Flour Mills, the Union would be forced to withdraw the services of all the Crown Flour Mills staff in the Ports, as no serious Union would allow a “foreign” Union into its promises to unionize its own under its jurisdiction.

“If this exercise was successful in Warri, Delta State, noting would stop it here at the Lagos Ports. Lagos cannot be an exception of good labour initiative in practice,” PG Bunu Abi vowed.
