The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo says Nigeria deserves to be the host of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Regional Centre of Excellence because because it has been providing technical support to Liberia and Sierra Leone in this regard.

For Nigeria to achieve this, Keyamo therefore sought the support of the Secretary-General of the WMO, Professor Andrea Celeste Saulo.

Keyamo made this demand and others when he, in company of the Director General of Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Ambassador Abiodun Richards Adejola and some technical staff of NIMET, met the Secretary-General of the WMO, Professor Andrea Celeste Saulo, in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

While seeking training opportunities for Aeronautical Meteorological Personnel in Nigeria, the minister also demanded WMO to assist Nigeria launch a national roadmap in respect of the Early-Warnings-for-All-initiative by the United Nations which, he said, is built on four pillars.

Other demands were WMO support for NiMet in implementing Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) for sectoral activities in Nigeria, increased Fellowship opportunities for Members (Nigeria in particular) and WMO in implementing Data Rescue support.
