Nigerians commend NCAA for sanctioning Kenya Airways

Many Nigerians have commended the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for sanctioning Kenya Airways over maltreatment of Gloria Omisore and two other Nigerians recently.

They said the sanction would serve as a deterrent to other foreign and local airlines who take air passengers for granted.

Gloria Omisore and others had reported Kenya Airways to the NCAA over its failure to process refund and compensation flight cancellation and missing, and baggage loss.

The NCAA had invited Kenya Airways officials to explain what led to the maltreatment of the Nigerian passengers. On May 7, 2025, the NCAA sanctioned the airline for the infraction committed against her Nigerian passengers.

The sanction letter, posted by Mr. Michael Achimugu, the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, NCAA, on X, reads thus:

LETTER OF SANCTION CONVEYED TO KENYAN AIRWAYS:

Today, May 7, 2025, the NCAA has sent a letter of sanction to the operator, Kenya Airways, over the cases of Gloria Omisore and two other passengers. The penalties are for consumer protection-related infractions  including right to care, failure to provide full disclosure of terms of carriage, failure to respond to the Authority’s request, failure to process refund and compensation, and lost baggage.

In addition to the fine in line with the NCAA Regulations 2023, the airline has seven days to pay the refunds and compensation of 1000 special drawing rights to the affected passengers.

Failure to comply with the letter will attract stiffer penalties for the airline.

Even if they don’t respect us, the fear of sanctions will make them behave.
