Today, Wednesday the 15th of October, is the birthday of Prince Olayiwola Shittu. He is 75 years old.
A respected personality, Prince shittu has been a recurring decimal in developmental discourses in the shipping industry in Nigeria over the past 40 years.
He was on the pay roll of the Nigerian Ports Authority in his early years before taking up the gauntlet and transitioning to private practice by founding Skelas Nigeria Limited, a company with tentacles in all aspects of the maritime trade including customs clearance, ship agency, import and export. Today, the organization has ballooned with phenomenal success and transmuted to Skelas Group embracing the hospitality industry with a chain of hotels and tourism concerns.
Like a golden fish, Prince Shittu’s high intellectual endowments have been fully and freely tapped by the maritime industry. He has been actively involved in many committees in NPA, Customs and the Federal government that search for growth and development of the industry. The apogee of his public service trajectory saw him emerge as the National President of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents.
Interestingly, Shittu came on at a time the organization was befuddled by a near intractable political malaise which had hampered and whittled its status in the industry. Deploying his talent, the new President turned the story around and in eight years ANLCA had again become a respected body in Customs circles and in the industry in general.
Among Prince Shittu’s notable achievements can be listed the acquisition of a befitting ANLCA national secretariat in the Festac Extension Scheme of Lagos. Some conscientious members of the association were sent on professional refresher courses abroad, in the USA, Europe and as far as Korea and Japan. Many were also trained in-house in ASYCUDA, NICIS 1 and NICIS 2.
Prince Olayiwola Shittu is an embodiment of humility, a fatherly persona with gifts of empathy and hospitality.
PortNews wishes him a Happy Birthday and many more years in good health. And may Almighty God’s abundant mercy be his portion.
