We are friends only to companies that treat our members fairly – MWUN PG

The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has stated that the Union would only go against any company in the seaport that treats its workforce, who are members of the Union, badly.

Comrade Bunu maintained that the Union would take any company serious when the workers’ welfares are not shortchanged or compromised.

The MWUN President-General stated this when the Managing Director of GMT Shipping Company, Mr. Tim Maguire, paid him a courtesy visit at the Union’s secretariat at Olodi, Apapa, Lagos.

Comrade Bunu Abi said members of the Union had been trained to give their optimum output on duty; hence, the Union would always discipline erring workers anytime they were found wanting.

“The only way the leadership of the Union could go against any company in the maritime sector is when workers are treated with a “Lepers’ hand, and that’s one of the major reasons, the Union will not be friendly with any company in the industry. The Union will take any company serious only if and when the interests of workers welfares are not marginalized or shortchanged. The Union workers have been trained to give their optimum output each time they’re on duty; hence, the Union would always discipline erring workers anytime they are found wanting,” said he.

The labour leader thanked Mr. Maguire for the visit and pledged that the mutual benefits from the relationship both bodies have enjoyed will wax stronger, provided that GMT will continue to uphold its workers friendly policies which of course is the bedrock of the Union’s interest at all times in the industry.

The Managing Director, Maguire, said the essence of the visit was to congratulate Comrade Bunu over his recent election victory and also to show solidarity and support of GMT towards his leadership.

Maguire described Comrade Bunu as a refined labour leader and astute maritime expert, whose immense contributions towards the maritime sector, even before ascending his new designation could not be overemphasized.

He further explained that the new PG of the Union is a complete gentleman with integrity that has been put to test over time; hence, the quest of management of GMT to continue to foster its existing relationship with the Union, believing that GMT and the Union have come a long way and will continue to partner each other for the progress of the sector.
