2026: NLC leader charges terminal operators to review wages of dockworkers

The immediate past President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government to look into the wages of workers throughout the nation as Nigeria entered the year 2026.

In a similar vein, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju called on the terminal operators to review the wages of dockworkers and seafarers in their employment, given the harsh economic trend in the country.

Comrade Adeyanju, who is the Deputy President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Vice President Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), made the call in a new year message to workers in Lagos.

The labour leader harped on the return of the onboard security gangway men to the nation’s seaports system, given the huge revenue loss being recorded yearly as a result of poor accountability of number of vessels that come into the ports daily.

“With this obvious laxity in the nation’s seaports, Nigeria will continue to experience huge loss of revenue to unidentified individual Nigerans,” said Adeyanju, who urged the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to act fast in this direction towards boosting national revenue generation.

The Vice President Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) admonished the Federal Government to act fast in its resolve to quelling the recurrent  insurgencies in the country, believing that the steps taken so far by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR were in the right direction to bringing a lasting peace to Nigeria.

The Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress thanked Nigerian workers for their resilience in the face of harsh economic reality, which has significantly affected the cost of living in the country compared to their far less monthly wages.
