Blue Economy: Nigerian Shippers’ Council warns against Illegal, unregulated fishing
The Executive Secretary/CEO of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Akutah Pius, has warned that unsustainable extraction, pollution, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, climate‑change impacts and weak governance erode the oceans’ long‑term economic potential.
Dr. Akutah stated this at the 8th edition of the National Tourism Transportation Summit and Expo, held in Abuja from 2nd to 3rd December 2025.
Represented by Mr. Mustapha Zubairu, Director Human Resources Management of the Council, Akutah revealed that a resilient Blue Economy depends on science‑based resource management, robust policy frameworks, modern technology and active community involvement.

The summit, themed “Tourism and Transportation Connectivity: Accelerating the Synergy for National Socio‑Economic Growth and Development”, served as a forum for discussing stronger ties between the tourism and transport sectors.
In a paper presentation titled “Sustainable Management of Marine Resources for Blue Economy Growth”, NSC boss said that with coordinated, well‑funded and technology‑driven marine governance strategy, Nigeria and Africa could unlock billions of dollars in annual economic benefits, create millions of jobs and restore ecological stability.
He emphasized that sustainable management is a critical pathway for unlocking productivity, protecting livelihoods, enhancing biodiversity, and ensuring economic resilience.
