Port of Antwerp-Bruges has launched Volta 1, Europe’s first fully electric tugboat, marking a key step toward its goal of climate-neutral operations by 2050.
Powered by high-capacity lithium-titanium-oxide batteries, Volta 1 delivers zero-emission performance with a 12-hour operating time and 70-ton towing capacity, matching conventional diesel tugs.
Volta 1 is part of a wider green fleet renewal strategy, replacing older tugs that account for 85% of the port’s CO₂ emissions. It joins other innovative vessels like the Hydrotug (hydrogen-powered) and Methatug (methanol-powered), enabling comparisons between alternative fuels.
This initiative positions Antwerp-Bruges as a multi-fuel and sustainability leader among global ports. Volta 1 not only demonstrates the technical and operational feasibility of electrification in demanding environments but also supports the EU Green Deal and broader transport decarbonisation goals.
