We don’t entertain trafficking of illicit drugs on our trains- NRC MD, Opeifa
The Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, says the NRC maintains a zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse and illicit trafficking across all train corridors, stations, workshops, and operational facilities in Nigeria.
Dr. Kayode Opeifa pointed out the organization is strengthening collaborations with the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Nigerian Railway Police Force, and staff unions to ensure that all railway corridors are never used for the trafficking of banned and illicit substances.
Opeifa stated this at an event organized by NRC to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Lagos last week.
The theme of the event “NRC Reiterates Commitment to a Drug-Free, Safe Railway.”
He said the position of the organization on drug abuse is clear, saying “As the Corporation responsible for moving millions of Nigerians and transporting critical goods across the country, we recognize that drug abuse is more than a public health concern. It is a serious safety, security, and operational risk. On the railway, a single moment of impaired judgment can have devastating consequences.
“We will continue to scale up awareness campaigns, education, and counselling programmes for our staff and host communities.”
He encouraged staff members struggling with substance use to access our confidential support channels. Seeking help is a sign of strength and responsibility.
“We urge passengers, staff, and members of the public to report any suspicious activities. Railway safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Opeifa advised, encouraging Nigeriana to choose life over drugs, safety over risk.
